JIT Submits Its Findings On Panama Case And This Has Caused A Storm On Twitter

The release of the notorious Panama Papers took the world by storm and no other country took the hit harder than Pakistan. It seems like yesterday when the papers named Nawaz Sharif and funneled up a storm that threatened to uproot his political dynasty. A Pandora’s box of accusations, investigations, and rulings opened up when documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca were released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

While Imran Khan saw this as his knight in shining armor that would hand him the reins to Pakistan, the Sharif family saw this as the nuclear apocalypse that would eradicate the Sharif family from Pakistani politics forever.

After a split verdict was announced in April, a JIT was formed to investigate claims of money laundering.

After many debacles, the JIT put in place to investigate the scandal has submitted its findings.

A three-judge bench of the SC examined the report that has probed in the allegations of money laundering against the Sharif family. The bench asked for transcripts of all speeches made in the last 60 days by PML-N’s Talal Chaudhry, Railways Minister Saad Rafique, and the PM’s Special Assistant on Political Affairs Asif Kirmani. It is being presumed that the judges need to examine these speeches to see if they have any contemptuous content.

A criminal case is to be filed against SECP Pakistan Chairman Zafar Hijazi in order to find out the culprits behind the tampering of records of businesses owned by the Sharif family.

Furthermore, an order was passed to publicly reveal the name and institution of the individual responsible for leaking the picture of Hussain Nawaz sitting before the JIT. Since this matter does not fall into the SC’s jurisdiction, the government is responsible for forming a commission to probe into the matter.

The Jang Group has landed in hot water after a story titled “Panama JIT ‘doesn’t find PM guilty,’ but his sons”, appeared in The News on Monday, July 10. Since the story misreported the findings of the report, a contempt of court notice is to be issued against the media group’s owner Mir Shakeelur Rehman, his brother Javed ur Rehman and reporter Ahmad Noorani over false reporting.

The JIT has also recommended that the SC open a reference against the PM and his children after their probe discovered that the family’s income sources do not support the amount of wealth they have accumulated.

“Significant gap/disparity amongst the known and declared sources of income and the wealth accumulated by the Respondent No. 1, 6, 7 and 8 have been observed,” the JIT observed in its concluding remarks.

“The financial structure and health of companies in Pakistan having linkage to the Respondents also do no substantiate the wealth of the Respondents,” it continued.
