Top 14 Unforgettable Moments of Year 2017
2017 is coming to an end soon. Like every year, this year has also been a mixture of happiness and sorrows for all of us. Here is a round-up of some major events that occurred through the year in Pakistan:
1. Operation Radd-ul-Fassad Was Started
At the start of the year 2017, Army in consolidation with the law enforcement agencies launched Operation Radd-ul-fasad on 22nd February 2017 to eliminate and disarm the hidden sleeper terrorist cells in Pakistan in light of National Action Plan.
2. The Final of 2nd Edition Of PSL Was Successfully Held in Lahore
The Final of PSL 2nd edition was held successfully on 5th March 2017 at Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The event marked the return of high profile cricket to Pakistan after 2009 attack on Sri Lankan Cricket team. Many international cricketers came to Pakistan to play the PSL2 Final including Darren Sammy, Chris Jordan, and others. The successfully held PSL2 final paved way for international cricket in Pakistan after 2009.
3. Mashal Khan Was Killed By An Angry Mob in Mardan
AN angry mob killed young student Mashal Khan of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Pakistan over fake allegations of posting blasphemous content online. The killing took place in the university premises on 13th April 2017.
4. Pakistan Won ICC Champions Trophy Beating India
It was a good year for Pakistan cricket. Pakistan won the ICC Champions’ Trophy. Pakistan beat India at The Oval in London on 18th April 2017 to win their first ever ICC Champions’ Trophy.
5. Oil Tanker Caught Fire in Bahawalpur Killing more than 157 people
An oil tanker from Keamari, Sindh to Vehari, Punjab, met with an accident near village Safeerwala, near Bahawalpur. According to the reports, the tanker had a rollover incident resulting in spill and fire. There were also reports that the reason behind fire was due to someone throwing a lit cigarette near spilled oil. The accident resulted in killing more than 157 people and injuring a lot more.
6. Nawaz Sharif Was Disqualified For Lifetime by The Supreme Court
The ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif was disqualified for the lifetime by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 28, 2017. The court’s historic decision was in the light of the report submitted by the JIT formed by the Supreme Court in reference to the Panama papers issue.
7. Pakistan’s Magic Healer Dr. Ruth Pfau’s Death
Pakistan lost Dr. Ruth Pfau, a German-born Pakistani Physician who shifted to Pakistan and devoted more than 50 years of her life fighting for leprosy in Pakistan. She was given a state funeral on 19th August 2017 in honor of her services for Pakistani society.
8. Desi Gora Comedy Artist Jeremy McLellan Became A Pindi Boy
American Comedian Jeremy McLellan visited Pakistan and shared a lovely image of Pakistan with the world through his social media posts. He was termed as the honorary Pindi Boy as he was the forefront supporter of rights of all the Pindi boys.
9. Blue Whale Game Scare In Pakistan
Blue Whale game scared Paksitanis a lot in September when different reports started coming in that teenage children were found playing this deadly game.
10. Mahira Khan- Ranbir Kapoor Pictures Controversy
Photos of Mahira Khan and Ranbir Kapoor smoking somewhere in New York went viral all over the places. Internet was abuzz with the photos controversy for quite some time and it came to a point that even Ranbir and Mahira had to give statements relating to it.
11. Sri Lankan International Cricket Team Visited Pakistan For T20 Series
The doors of international cricket opened for Pakistan after 9 years when the Sri Lankan International Cricket Team agreed to visit Pakistan for T20 series. Pakistani cricket grounds enjoyed international cricket after 2009 in 2017. Highest security was arranged to make sure the T20 matches could be held successfully.
12. A Young Pakistani Physicist Impressed Scientists At the International Young Physicists’ Tournament
Shaheer Niazi, a 17-year-old Pakistani physics students impressed scientists at International Young Physicists’ Tournament by presenting his design for electrical honeycomb. Although the scientists knew of this electrical honeycomb but Shaheer presented photographic evidence of charged ions creating the honeycomb.
13. Malala Yousafzai’s Jeans Controversy
In October 2017, photos of Malala Yousafzai wearing Jeans and high heeled boots went viral on social media and the Pakistani moral police on the internet left no stone unturned to school the girl for her “inappropriate dressing”.
14. Quaid-e-Azam’s Daughter Dina Wadia’s Death
Quaid-e-Azam’s daughter Dina Wadia died due to pneumonia on 2nd November 2017 at the age of 98. She was the only daughter of the founder of Pakistan.
